F2: What's taking you so long anyway?

 

FI: I have to finish cleaning my camera ...

 

F2: Why didn't you do that before?

 

F1: I forgot.

 

F2: "I forgot." "I forgot." That's what you always say. You drive me crazy with your "I forgot"s.

 

F1: O.K. O.K. Don't get uptight. I'm ready.

 

2. A mother and daughter are shopping in a supermarket

 

D: Mommy. Can I have a candy bar?

 

M: No. I told you before. It's no good for you.

 

D: But I'm hungry, Mommy.

 

M: I don't care if you're starving. No. Stop pestering me.

 

D: But Mommy . . .

 

M: Lisa, I'm losing my patience with you . . .

 

3. A woman and man are talking on the telephone.

 

W: . . . so, will you be ready by six?

 

M: I'm sorry, Joan. I can't make it tonight.

 

W: What do you mean, "I can't make it tonight"?

How might you handle the following situations?

 

1. You just arrived in Los Angeles. You're at the airport trying to hail a taxi but none stops. A begger keeps coming up and asking you for money.

 

2. You are shopping in a large department store with a friend. You are waiting to be helped, but no one comes. Your friend is becoming more and more impatient.

 

3. You're looking for your watch. You thought you put it on the dresser in your bedroom. Your son comes in with a guilty look on his face. You ask him if he saw the watch, but he doesn't answer.
