intrinsic motivation

This is really important for me: How can I help my students to become more intrinsically motivated in English?

Hi Arad,

Here are some suggestions:

  • The teacher is supposed to make the students assume some responsibilities in the classes.
  • The difficulty level of the class activities should not be too high. Otherwise, the students may lose their self-confidence, which is certainly one of the basic ingredients of motivation.
  • The teacher is also expected to occasionally inform the students about the benefits that are derived from learning English as an international language. When the students happen to know all the advantages of learning English, they will become more motivated to attempt to acquire this language.
  • There is a technical term, which is referred to as ‘Language Ego’. It means that when the students are exposed to a second or foreign language, they will develop a second identity, as well. As a result, they tend to be rather fragile, aggressive, defensive, and in short, sensitive to their surrounding situations. The teacher should consider this important point by not being too critical or judgmental.
  • The process of education should not be tedious. The students of the 21st century are somehow different from the students of the previous generation. And when it comes to English, the students prefer to have fun and enjoy learning English.
  • If the students are young, apart from intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation should also be instilled into your students. To achieve this goal, anticipation of rewards and giving them plenty of praise and encouragement are genuinely practical.
